The Cave Boka

Divng all the siphons was a great success. The cave is 1425 m long and rises 89 m, the maximum depth of water is 35 m.
Czech cavers put a lot of work and effort into research. They worked hard!
Discovery from below has become too difficult, so they are looking for a connection to the cave from above.
From the neighboring cave, the Polish cavers are following the draft in the direction of Boka, but they are not yet very close.

Karst Spring Boka

The water spirit lives in the spring, according to believers of the old faith.
During severe droughts, they went from the Volčanski Ruti village to the spring and asked the water spirit for rain. On the way home it started to rain,
(Pavel Medvešček - Klančar, 2015, Iz nevidne strani neba, page 115).

The temperature of the water in the spring fluctuates between 0.1o C (January - February) and 4.0o C (at the end of September and on the beginning of October), because of the inflow of deep karst waters.
It almost made "frost bite" of my mouth when it was cold, but it was very tasty warmed up.

The Source, the Stream and the upper part of the Waterfall

The Waterfall and Rapids below it

The waterfall is 104 m high, below it is 30 m high the second stage, followed by steep rapids and large intermediate pools.
The bad is also characterized by huge rocks.

The Waterfall

There is little water in winter.
When a strong wind blows, the water disperses and the waterfall disappears into a spray.

The ice-bound Waterfall

Few winters are so cold that the water in the waterfall freezes.

The abundant Waterfall

The most rain falls on Kanin high karst massif in autumn. After several days of rain, the waterfall becomes really impressive.
The maximum flow of the Boka should be around 150 m3/s (together with torrential water from gutters). Then the spray completely covers the bridge and soaks the pedestrian to the skin.

The Boka Gorge

In this part, the gorge is more than 100 m deep. Below it are wide estuary gravels crossed by the Boka bridge.
In the upper part of the picture we see Čezsoški Prodi and Vrbulje in the Soča river bed.

Pools in the Gorge

Ice and water have polished the huge rocks in the lower part of the gorge.
Between rocks and stones, the Boka stagnates in large pools.
On the outflow gravels the water sinks into them. When it flows, the pools are small or non-existent.

Collapsed right Wall of the Waterfall

Most of the right wall of the Boka waterfall collapsed on Tuesday, 13th February, 2024.
A rockfall with a volume of several thousand cubic meters occurred under it.
Rocks and stones covered the pools under the waterfall. Since then, they are gone, the water flows through the rockfall.
The floods will wash away part of the rockfall and significantly change the conditions in the Boka and the Soča riverbeds below its confluence.
